Code Compliance Officer

The Code Compliance Officer is a non-exempt position reporting to the Chief Code Compliance Officer.  The purpose of the role is to ensure that all building, land use, and related codes adopted by the City of Johns Creek are understood and fairly enforced.  The Code Compliance Officer works Monday through Friday, and some overtime will be required during evenings and occasionally on weekends. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Code Compliance Officer is responsible for performing inspections and enforcement of codes and ordinances including nuisance abatement, property maintenance, housing; signs and noise.  The Code Compliance Officer investigates issues and ensures compliance with laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to general municipal codes.  The following duties are representative of the range of duties performed under this job classification.

  • Enforces the City’s regulations regarding Code Compliance
  • Assists with special studies when directed by the Community Development Director, City Manager, or City Council which may require field inspection of various sites
  • In the absence of the Community Development Director, may be required to attend conferences, public hearings, and professional meetings regarding the department’s code functions
  • Assists with public information speaking engagements to civic groups, homeowners associations and other similar groups on Code Enforcement policies, procedures, codes, and ordinances
  • Inspects and performs both periodic and follow-up inspections of new and existing buildings and occupancies
  • Issues notices, fines, and citations while ensuring that violations are properly documented by taking photographs, samples or other evidence and maintains proper chain of custody
  • Forwards cases to the City Attorney and/or District Attorney's office for review and action, and testifies, as needed, in legal proceedings
  • Manages caseload and prioritizes all tasks received
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or GED 
  • One to three years’ experience in code compliance/enforcement
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, using the English with impeccable grammar
  • Ability to read and understand materials written in English
  • Experience with MS Office computer applications
  • Must possess a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Must have at least five years of good driving history
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associates degree in Fire Technology, Environment Studies, Chemistry, Law Enforcement, Construction Technology, Public Administration or a closely related field
  • Bilingual
  • Ability to understand legal descriptions and boundary maps of real property
  • Ability to interpret maps and plans and analyze technical information related to municipal code enforcement
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of inspection and roles of various agencies involved in municipal code enforcement regulatory processes
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations, and ordinances related to municipal code enforcement
  • Experience working in a public-private partnership
  • Experience working with elected officials and municipal executive staff

PAY:
The Code Compliance Officer starting pay will be competitive and commensurate with the chosen candidate’s qualifications and experience.  Starting pay is expected to fall between $20.43 and $23.27/hour.  The City of Johns Creek also offers an attractive benefits package, including health benefits, retirement, and paid leave.
